  • Currys listed in the Financial Times’ prestigious Climate Leaders rankings for a fourth year
  • Follows a year of progress at the tech retailer, from millions of e-waste items collected to new electric vehicles on the road
  • Comes as Currys continues its push toward a 50% group-wide cut in greenhouse gas emissions by FY29/30

Currys has been named among Europe’s Climate Leaders by the Financial Times for the fourth year, as the tech retailer continues its push toward a 50% reduction in Group wide greenhouse gas emissions by FY29/30.

The FT’s rankings, compiled with Statista, measure how far companies have come in cutting Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions, alongside broader climate commitments.

Currys achieved an overall score of 63.05, which is built on environmental performance data from Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) and the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), both highly regarded  in climate action benchmarking.

Currys has cut Scope 1 and 2 market-based emissions by 35% and Scope 3 emissions from purchased goods and services, and the use of sold products by 37%, both against a 2019/20 baseline.

On the road, the retailer expanded its electric vehicle trials into heavy goods vehicles, introduced a total of 50 battery electric vehicles and hybrid vans for our repair engineers across the UK, while its property portfolio across the UK, Ireland and Nordics continues to run on 100% renewable electricity*.

The retailer also operates one of Europe’s largest technology repair centres, employs around 1,500 repair engineers across the Group, and completed 1.6 million repairs last year alone. Add in trade-in, refurbishment and recycling, and Currys collected 6.3 million items of electronic waste across the Group last year, up 13% year-on-year.

As part of that, Currys and partners launched a Hidden Treasure Hunt, inviting primary schools across the UK to hunt down unwanted electronics at home and drop them at any Currys store in exchange for points.

In UK stores, Currys doubled its Cash for Trash reward to £10 off a customer’s next purchase during Peak, driving more than 340,000 redemptions and £2.5m in customer savings throughout the year, while a Nordic version of the scheme – newly launched in Sweden and Denmark – helped lift e-waste collection across the region by 15%.

“We’re thrilled to be recognised in this year’s Climate Leaders rankings, putting us among the best performing retailers in Europe on climate. We’ll keep focusing our efforts on cutting emissions and playing our part in changing the nation’s relationship with tech. The FT’s rankings are hugely respected, and we’re proud to feature for a fourth year.”
