For the third year in a row, leading tech retailer Currys has been listed in the Financial Times’ ‘Climate Leaders in Europe’ rankings as it continues to progress towards its target of cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 50% Group-wide by FY29/30.
In this year’s rankings, Currys placed in the top 10 within the retail and ecommerce sector, achieving an overall score of 73.4.
The rankings assess companies based on reductions in Scope 1, 2 and 3 carbon emissions, as well as other climate-related initiatives. Scores are informed by environmental performance data from CDP and the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), widely regarded as the gold standard for climate action benchmarking.
Currys’ entire property portfolio is now powered by renewable energy, and this year the retailer has taken steps on the transition away from a fossil-fueled fleet. In the past year, Currys has welcomed its first electric HGVs to both the UK and Nordics business, with plans to roll out new electric delivery and installation vehicles in 2025.
Efforts to reduce Scope 3 emissions are backed by Currys’ Long Live Your Tech ambition, which addresses the UK’s growing e-waste crisis. From offering a range of refurbished tech online and operating one of Europe’s largest tech repair centres, to the in-store Cash for Trash scheme - where customers receive at least at least a £5 voucher for any unwanted tech - Currys is actively reducing emissions right across its value chain. When items can’t be repaired or resold, they are responsibly recycled, with over 5.5 million items collected across the Group last year.
“We’re delighted to be ranked again this year – it’s a clear sign of the continued progress we're making. There’s still a long way to go, but we remain focused on efforts to reduce emissions and promote more circular behaviours around the buying, using and disposing of tech. The FT rankings are a great moment of recognition for all of us, and we’re proud to be part of this list.”
