Friday 17th March 2023: Currys colleagues based at the company’s Customer Repair Centre in Newark have been nominated for a prestigious industry award.

On behalf of Retail Week, a panel of retail experts has nominated the Newark team for the 2023 ‘Community Heroes Award’ after they raised over £200,000 for charity in the last four years.

The Community Heroes Award, which will be presented at the Retail Week awards on 30th March, celebrates the important role that retail plays in local communities. This award aims to spotlight businesses who have gone above and beyond their day jobs to help local people through challenging times, something the Currys Newark colleagues have demonstrated in abundance.

The Newark CSC site acts as one of the main Currys distribution, customer service and repair hubs. It’s a big part of the Newark community and as local organisations were hit by the cost-of-living crisis, the Currys team felt the urge to give back.

The team have been working hard over the last four years to make a positive impact with their fundraising activities. From skydiving, walking a million steps, cake sales and more, employees at the Currys Newark Campus come together regularly to support a wide range of charities.

Driving 22 hours to help those affected by the Ukraine war is one of many incredible examples where they’ve really gone above and beyond to help. Aid donations of clothing and medical supplies were collected by Currys colleagues coming to a value of £6000. They then drove the items for over 22 hours to the Poland/Ukrainian border to help the Ukrainian people.

Other charities impacted by their donations and fundraising activities include the Beaumond House Hospice, the Children’s Bereavement Centre, You Can Do Sport, Nottinghamshire Guide Dogs, Hope House School, the Salvation Army and the Halfway House Dog Rescue and Afghani refugees.  The team strive to help anyone who reaches out for support, from large local charities to global organisations, they’ve been recognised for the wide range of charities they help and the strong relationships they’ve built up with them over the years.

The impact can be evidenced by the impressive figures they’ve managed to fundraise. In 2022 alone they raised over £30,000, taking them to £200,000+ over the last four years. The reach has truly been far and wide…they even got to name an adorable Labrador puppy, Coco, who they sponsored as she’s training to become a guide dog for Nottinghamshire Guide Dogs. Coco the puppy is one of many who’s extremely grateful for the support from the team!

Simon Hodgson, who’s part of the Repair Centre Management team in Newark shares his insights into the team efforts: “We’ll find out if we’ve been successful at the Retail Week Awards which are taking place on 30 March. Regardless of the outcome, the impact and lives changed by all the hard work is remarkable and the team should be incredibly proud. It really showcases the team spirit we have we here, the team are always eager to support our local community. Best of luck to everyone involved”.
